After my immense disappointment with the Holiday 2016 Pretty Collector’s Paintbox by Tarte (review here) I am THRILLED with the quality and design of this palette. Way to recover me as a consumer and fan of your brand, Tarte!
The pigmentation in this Pro Palette, a permanent addition to the Tarte collection is fantastic. There is nothing lacking in the quality of these eyeshadows. There’s no need to rub your brush deep into the pans; a light swipe is all you need for a layer and you can build from there. They also remove easily.
The shadows are super soft, buttery, and powdery (the mattes not the duochrome) and there is a bit of kick up but it’s easily mitigated by tapping your brush off and just using the excess fallout for a round 2 application. I find the duochromes apply best with a finger. The swatches below are all a light swipe or two on the forearm except for the duochromes which are just 1 finger swipe each. The matte shades are all quite smooth. I would say the only shades that aren't quite as smooth in application as the others (but they still work well) are the darker shades in the 4th column (except for the purple/burghundy one that one swipes just like the others).

One of the big criticisms of Tarte eyeshadows is that the company never really strays from what they know: neutral toned eyeshadows. Tarte has a pretty cookie-cutter approach when it comes to bringing out new eyeshadow palettes and often falls into the same critical discussions (especially on Reddit) of brands like Too Faced who are known for always including that “awkward shade of purple” in the bulk of their palettes. Tarte likes their reddish, cranberry color which you can find in many of their palettes. The additions of the 4 duochrome shades are a really nice touch and save this palette from being “just another Tarte palette”. While even without those I wouldn’t consider this a boring palette by any means, it seems to be Tarte’s attempt at stepping out of their regular routine and trying something new. In regards to this palette, I think this approach is appropriate and it definitely works. However, if you're familiar with Tarte, remember that this is still their regular formula. They aren't Urban Decay with their edgy, insanely pigmented and bright colored single eyeshadow shades. Tarte favors a more natural look and this palette still marches to that tune.

The mirror is a nice size for those who prefer a mirror in their palette, and it's a prety glamorous mirror (if that makes any sense at all). I enjoy the layout as well, with the duochromes in a round shape and the mattes in square. Each row prompts you with 4 different looks, with an included duochrome, but you can of course mix-and-match as you choose. The palette is a bit tricky to open. It’s not a palette you can open with one hand. This makes it great for travel but you do have to argue with it a little before it will open up.
