Becca Cosmetics ~ Light Chaser Highlighter & Liquid Crystal Glow Gloss Collection | Review

Becca Cosmetics Light Chaser Highlight and Liquid Crystal Glow Gloss
I was thrilled to hear Becca Cosmetics announce their new Light Chaser Highlight & Liquid Crystal Glow Gloss collection. This collection includes 6 Liquid Crystal Glow Glosses and 6 Light Chaser Highlighters, each of which is infused with kaleidoscope pearls that glow when they catch the light to create a multi-dimensional and other-worldly appearance. So says the copyright messaging on Sephora.com!

I am sad to see that this is a Limited Edition as many of these products are unique to my collection and I love the new skin they've added to a packaging design I already adore. Some stores had, from what I've seen, one highlighter and one lip topper gloss during the Fall 2017 Preview Event that was held for Rouge members last weekend. Unfortunately, neither my local Sephora nor the store by my parents place had these in stock for that event. I ordered them the following evening when they launched on the Sephora app early.

For those of you who don't know, the Sephora app will sometimes release products 24 or 48 hours earlier than online. This is a new strategy that Sephora corporate has begun in an attempt to drive Sephora shoppers to use the app. It works for me; an opportunity to get products a little bit earlier? Both highlighters and lip gloss come in the same shades, 1 main shade which "flashes" a secondary shade when it catches the light.

The Light Chaser Highlighters are the real draw for me in this collection. The first one I noticed when I saw the announcements photos was Amethyst x Geode which is almost a mauve magenta. I have nothing like this in my collection and I absolutely adore this highlight in particular. It's not subtle. If you work in a professional corporation type of environment, this shade may be a bit over-the-top for that scene. But it's enchanting for everything else!

I also picked up Champagne Dream x Bellini, Rose Quartz x Seashell and Opal x Jade, the first two of which are probably the most wearable shades. Out of those three, Champagne Dream, in my opinion, is the most stunning. If you're into peachy shades of any kind, this is a must have. The Rose Quartz one is probably the most tame of these three. It's a lovely, soft, pale pink. Thought I think Opal x Jade is probably the least wearable, it's not as unnatural as one might think. The flashing jade is subtle; it's by no means a green highlighter. You can see in the below swatch how it does have a slight green shift but is still quite wearable.

The description of these highlighters from the Sephora website reads:

An ultra-creamy, kaleidoscopic highlighter that imparts unprecedented color dimension when the light hits it.

More than a highlighter, the Light Chaser Highlighter’s transformative formula is the perfect marriage of kaleidoscopic color and light. Each shade is infused with kaleidoscopic pearls that chase the light for an otherworldly glow that makes your favorite features beam bright. This unique highlighter shifts shades as your move, delivering hypnotizing color luminosity with a metamorphic finish.

Upon reading the reviews on Sephora.com, many people seem to be disappointed by the size of the product. For those curious, you get 0.02oz more in this product than you do in one of Becca's Shimmering Skin Perfector Blushes (0.21 versus 0.23). A regular highlighter is 0.28oz for $38 while these highlighters are $34 for 0.23oz of product. The packaging is also the size of their blushes. In a nutshell, you get slightly less product for slightly less money. Seems logical to me.

Some people also seem to be disappointed that these are not "boom in your face" highlighters. These are labeled as "light catching" for a reason. This means they are subtle until the light hits them, then they flash and create that "BOOM" highlight. If you want a little extra impact, apply with your finger and use a brush blend it out a little (unless you're going for that strobe look then a solid swipe across the upper cheekbones will do). I also wouldn't call these "ultra-creamy". When I think "ultra-creamy", I think extremely fine milled that the powder almost feels like a cream. These feels like a powder, maybe slightly less creamy than Becca's permanent highlighters.

The Liquid Crystal Glow Gloss can be used as a gloss by itself or as a gloss topper which is the new on-trend lip product following the ultra matte phase. Coincidentally, these glosses work great on an ultra matte liquid lipstick formula. On the Sephora website, the product is described to create a "liquid crystal, glowing lip look". The liquid part of the gloss is a tinted gloss with micro-glitter, also called "pearls" that flash in the light. The description from the Sephora website reads:

A gloss with kaleidoscopic pearls that create an otherworldly, liquid crystal, glowing lip look.

Inspired by raw gemstones melted into liquid form, kaleidoscopic pearls shift shades as they catch the light to take every lip look to the next level. Each shade features a custom mix of unique pearls blended together to create a multi-dimensional finish that flatters all skintones. The conditioning lip gloss formula is infused with a luxurious coconut and vanilla scent and enriched with nurturing ingredients that leave lips feeling lavishly soft and smooth.

The glosses feel nice on the lips; not sticky or tacky. With some lip products that contain micro-glitter I can sometimes feel a slight grittiness to the product. Not so with these. They also look lovely on the lips. The duo chrome is noticeable but not super obvious and "over the top". They are wearable, maybe not for a professional, corporate sort of environment, but everyday wearable for sure.

The glosses do smell strongly of coconut. I didn't realize these glosses were enriched with a coconut and vanilla scent when I bought them so when I went to swatch, I was strongly reminded of my Marc Jacobs Coconut Face Primer and O!Mega Coconut Bronzer. They also smell like the Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer which is also infused with coconut. If you know what any of those products smell like, these glosses smell just like that.

For reference, these Becca lip glosses are $22 for 0.17oz of product. This is 0.01oz more product than ABH lip glosses (0.16oz for $16) and slightly less product than a NARS lip gloss which are 0.18oz for $26.

Overall, these are fun products to add to my collection and I do hope Becca makes them a permanent addition. I also hope that Becca continues with this new packaging skin as it puts a nice whimsical feel to their industrial approach to packaging. For the record, I love Becca's packaging for their single blushes and highlighters. Like tiny little UFO's, they are sturdy and heavy. One of my favorites <3
